DeWitt County Board Chair Explains Referendum On Tuesday Ballot

A special referendum will be on the Tuesday ballot for DeWitt County voters and Monday night at a special candidates forum, the DeWitt County Board Chair expanded on what the measure is all about.

According to Board Chair Sherrie Brown, the advisory referendum question that deals with the landfill. She says it will give residents a voice on how they feel about permitting of a chemical waste unit above the Mahomet Aquifer.

Brown stresses this is an advisory vote, which means no matter how the vote turns out, the actions of elected officials may not change. She says it boils down whether people want chemical waste stored above the Mahomet Aquifer or not.

The candidates forum saw just one local official up for re-election next Tuesday attend, and that was incumbent Keith Koons.
