Illinois Town To Honor Veterans With Streets

A central Illinois community has found a special way to honor a resident who died while serving in Afghanistan.

Reports indicate on Veterans Day, a street sign will be erected on the street where Paul Smith lived. It will read: "In loving memory of SSG Paul Smith."

Smith was killed by a roadside bomb in 2009 while serving with the National Guard. His widow, Kim Smith, approached East Peoria Mayor Dave Mingus after her husband's death with the idea of honoring him with the sign.

Mingus says the sign will be up for three years. Then it will be taken down and given to the family.

The mayor's office is accepting applications from others interested in honoring a veteran with a street sign.
