Rauner Says He'll Meet With Cullerton, Madigan

Republican governor-elect Bruce Rauner says he's working on scheduling a meeting with two of Illinois' top Democrats, House Speaker Michael Madigan and Senate President John Cullerton.

Rauner spoke to reporters Thursday. It was his first news conference since winning office over Gov. Pat Quinn.

In his victory speech on election night, Rauner said his first calls were to Madigan and Cullerton. Later, spokesmen for Madigan and Cullerton said the leaders didn't directly speak with the governor-elect that night.

Rauner clarified Thursday, saying he left a message for Madigan's chief of staff and spoke to a Cullerton aide about taking a bipartisan approach to state government.

Rauner says his staff is in communication with both leaders' aides.

Rauner will be the first Republican governor of Illinois in more than a decade.
