East Peoria Sign Dedicated to Fallen Soldier

A memorial street sign has been dedicated to a fallen East Peoria soldier.

According to reports, the dedication for U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Paul Smith took place at the city's Civic Plaza Tuesday afternoon.

The 43-year-old was killed in Afghanistan in 2009 by a roadside bomb. Smith was survived by a wife and three children.

Smith's family was present at the sign's unveiling, as were several veterans who served alongside him in Afghanistan.

City officials say the idea was quickly agreed upon after it was presented by Mayor Dave Mingus.

The sign will be hung at the intersection of Jay Street and East Washington Street. City officials say it will stand for three to five years.
