Champaign Day Care Operator Charged With Battery

Police have arrested a longtime Champaign day care operator who they say seriously injured a 6-month-old boy.

Reports indicate, 54-year-old Debbie May was charged Wednesday with aggravated battery to a child and ordered her held on $150,000 bond.

Police say the boy has been hospitalized with a brain injury and a broken wrist for more than a week.

Prosecutors say May called the boy's mother on Nov. 5 and said he was acting unusually. They say he was limp and moaning when his parents took him to a hospital. Doctors say the injuries required adult force and weren't accidental.

Prosecutors say May denies that the boy fell or was dropped.

May faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted. It wasn't immediately clear if she has a lawyer.
