ISU Solar Car Team Recovering After Loss Before Big Race

The Illinois State University solar car team has recovered after losing its vehicle in a July fire and having to withdraw from a competition.

The team's revived solar car, the Mercury VI, was unveiled Sunday. The 550-pound vehicle will be shipped Thursday to the United Arab Emirates, where half of the 20-member team will compete in the 1,200-meter Abu Dhabi Solar Challenge. Solar car teams from around the world, including three others from the U.S., will also participate in the competition.

The vice president of the ISU team says the strongest teams are able to fix inevitable problems as they develop.

Reports indicate transportation from Illinois to Abu Dhabi is being subsidized by the event organizers. The administration and sponsors are helping to pay for additional costs.
