Eureka Woman Indicted in Washington Tornado Scam

A central Illinois woman has been indicted on theft charges for making unauthorized purchases on the credit card of a Washington tornado relief volunteer.

Reports indicate 58-year-old Marjorie Mesa of Eureka was issued the charge of a theft between $500 and $10,000 by a Tazewell County grand jury. She faces up to five years in prison if found guilty. She pleaded not guilty on Nov. 4.

According to court records, the victim contacted Washington police July 15 to report unauthorized charges totaling of more than $5,500 on her credit card.

The victim told police she came to Washington to do volunteer work to help tornado victims and met Mesa.

Mesa is scheduled to appear in court Dec. 11.
