1927 Pipe Organ Being Returned To Pekin Church

A 1927 pipe organ is being reinstalled at a Pekin church after it was removed over the summer for renovation work.

The instrument belonging to St. John's Lutheran Church was the 2,806th organ built at the former Hinners Organ Co. in Pekin. The plant opened in the 1870s and closed in the late 1930s.

According to reports, the organ was sent to Buzard Organ Co. in August for repairs and restoration. Its chambers were coated with 87 years of coal dust from the coal burning furnace that heated the church.

Buzard foreman David Brown says the organ means a lot to Pekin residents because it's likely the last Hinners Pipe Organ still being played in the city and some of the parishioners worked at the plant.
