Online Shopping Tips For Holidays

The parcel services of the country will be getting into high gear as the online shopping season begins Monday with Cyber Monday.

As you take to the comforts of your own home to knock out some of that holiday shopping, local authorities are encouraging taking some safeguards against opening yourself up to identity theft and other personal crimes. Clinton Police Chief Ben Lowers encourages responsible shopping.

Using proper spyware can mean the difference between keeping your credit card information safe and having it compromised. According to Chief Lowers, having up to date spyware and anti-virus software is almost a must when shopping online.

When shopping online, there are a couple signs that can indicate you are shopping on a secure website and network. Chief Lowers explains when on a secure website, the URL should begin with "https://", as the "S" indicates a secure site. He also notes there me be a lock icon on the browser status bar.

When shopping online, Chief Lowers encourages shoppers to keep meticulous bank records. If your bank offers online banking and ways to monitor transactions online, to utilize that service. He notes, with many banks now, the online service is free. He feels it is a great resource to make sure there are no unauthorized purchases being made and charged to your bank account or credit cards.
