One of central Illinois' hidden gems is gearing up for this holiday season.
Tonight, Allerton Park administrators are inviting the public out to help them finish up their holiday decorating. According to Matt Smith with Allerton, they are inviting families with kids to come out and create decorations from various items you may find around the park, as they put the finishing touches on the decorating of the mansion in preparation for a busy Christmas season.
The Mansion was host to very popular open houses many years ago, however, in recent years, those events have fallen by the wayside. Smith explains they hoping to bring those back and have even added attractions to the open houes they feel will give a bit of a nostalgic feel to the mansion and the park.
Smith feels the nostalgic feel of the home comes from of course, the age of the home but he also believes the home takes people back to a time when they would come to the park and mansion when events they hosted were popular. He hopes they can rekindle some of that.
Open houses at Allerton Park take place on December 13, 14 and 15th.
Tonight's decorating event and this weekend's open houses kick off what will be a very busy weekend at the park and throughout the mansion more specifically. We'll have more on the upcoming activities at the mansion next week on Regional Radio News.
