Joseph says his mom used that same tenacity to fight for the people of Illinois. Topinka served in the state legislature and went on to become the state's first female treasurer. She was the first woman to top the GOP ticket for governor back in 2006 but lost out to Rod Blagojevich. The loss didn't sit her down though, she became the state comptroller in 2011. Topinka died suddenly last week after having a stroke.
