The teams announced the deal on Thursday night after "USA Today" reported his physical with the Padres revealed arthritis in both hips. Catcher Tim Federowicz [[ fed-er-OH-vitch ]] and cash considerations are heading to the Friars along with Kemp in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal [[ yaz-MAH-nee gran-DAHL ]], righty Joe Wieland and pitching prospect Zach Eflin.

(Kansas City, MO) -- The Kansas City Royals are adding Kris Medlen to their pitching staff. The two sides have agreed to a two-year deal with a mutual option for 2017. The 29-year-old right-hander missed all of the 2014 season recovering from Tommy John surgery after an elbow injury in spring training with the Atlanta Braves. Medlen's lone season as a starter came in 2013 when he went 15-and-12 with a 3.11 ERA. He is 34-and-20 with a 2.95 ERA in 152 career appearances.
