Cards Honor Minor Leaguers; Baseball Notes

(St. Louis, MO) -- The Cardinals are honoring a pair of minor leaguers for their outstanding 2014 seasons. Marco Gonzales, who is expected to compete for a rotation job in 2015, was named the team's Minor League Pitcher of the Year, while outfielder Magneuris Sierra was named Player of the Year.

(San Diego, CA) -- Outfielder Matt Kemp is officially going from the Dodgers to the Padres. The teams announced the deal on Thursday night after "USA Today" reported his physical with the Padres revealed arthritis in both hips. Catcher Tim Federowicz [[ fed-er-OH-vitch ]] and cash considerations are heading to the Friars along with Kemp in exchange for catcher Yasmani Grandal [[ yaz-MAH-nee gran-DAHL ]], righty Joe Wieland and pitching prospect Zach Eflin.

(Kansas City, MO) -- The Kansas City Royals are adding Kris Medlen to their pitching staff. The two sides have agreed to a two-year deal with a mutual option for 2017. The 29-year-old right-hander missed all of the 2014 season recovering from Tommy John surgery after an elbow injury in spring training with the Atlanta Braves. Medlen's lone season as a starter came in 2013 when he went 15-and-12 with a 3.11 ERA. He is 34-and-20 with a 2.95 ERA in 152 career appearances.
