Recovering Stolen Guns Difficult In Springfield

Records show the recovery rate for stolen guns in Springfield is far lower than the national average.

According to reports, of 291 guns reported stolen from January 2012 through early this month, only 13 were recovered.

That 4.5 percent recovery rate pales compared to the national rate - although it, too, is low. The Justice Department's National Crime Victimization Survey an average of 232,400 guns were stolen each year from 2005 through 2011. About 17 percent were recovered.

In Bloomington, a similar records examination showed that of 84 guns stolen since 2012, six were recovered - 7.1 percent.

The majority of guns stolen in the capital city - 66 percent - were handguns.

In most cases, one gun is stolen.
