Illinois coach John Groce says guard Rayvonte Rice is out indefinitely after fracturing his left hand in practice.

The 6-foot-4 senior suffered the injury during practice Monday.

If surgery is necessary, Rice could be sidelined for as long as six weeks, or until about Feb. 17. That period includes 11 games, including Wednesday's Big Ten home opener against No. 11 Maryland.

 width=Rice leads the Illini in scoring (17.2 points per game) and rebounding (6.9). He had 20 points of 7-of-8 shooting in Saturday's 77-61 loss at Ohio State.

Illinois (10-5) is off to an 0-2 start in conference play. Rice suffered a groin injury early in the Big Ten season last year.

The Fighting Illini are sill looking to break into the Big Ten win column, having lost to Michigan and Ohio State thus far. Illinois is 10-and-5 overall. The Terrapins are 14-and-1, having won seven in-a-row.

Darrun Hilliard scored 21 points and No. 8 Villanova downed No. 24 St. John's, 90-72, at a lively Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

The Big East Top-25 clash had a March feel with fans of both schools providing plenty of energy in the back-and-forth battle.

The Wildcats (14-1, 2-1 Big East) silenced the Red Storm supporters down the stretch, however, and recovered nicely from their first loss of the season.

D'Angelo Harrison led St. John's (11-4, 0-3) with 25 points, while Phil Greene IV netted 14 in the club's third straight loss.
