Governor Rauner Reveals More of His Plans For Illinois

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner delivered his first major address to Illinoisans Wednesday afternoon.

The Governor expanded on ideas he's already introduced and revealed more of his plans for turning Illinois around. The venture capitalist discussed reforms he'd like to see made to the Illinois business climate.

Before leaving office, former Governor Pat Quinn vowed to raise the minimum wage in Illinois, but was never able to get lawmakers on board. Now Governor Rauner is calling on lawmakers to gradually increase the minimum wage to $10-hour by over the next seven years.

The Governor also discussed consolidation among local governments. Gov. Rauner says this would be a way to save taxpayers money, as exampled by DuPage County.

Governor Rauner called on lawmakers to reform how state workers are compensated by rewarding quality work. He says workers who save the state money, deserve bonuses.

K-12 education has been the source of great debate in recent months in Illinois, as Illinois schools continue to be underfunded, and Wednesday afternoon, Governor Rauner called on lawmakers to increase investments in early childhoold education.

Gov. Rauner revealed his plan to hire more prison workers in the Illinois prison system, calling the conditions in prisons "unacceptable" and "unsafe".

Governor Rauner also expanded on his calls for "right to work zones" in Illinois. He is proposing term limits for lawmakers and made a call for bans to campaign contributions from state worker unions and groups receiving Medicaid funding.
