DeWitt County SWCD 71st Meeting Recap

Landowners from across DeWitt County gathered Friday at the Clinton Country Club for the 71st annual meeting of the DeWitt County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Those in attendance were treated to a breakfast and door prizes, as well as updates involving all aspects of the local SWCD office. A key theme to the meeting was funding concerns given the State of Illinois' current financial situation, and Governor Rauner's recent budget proposal. However, Shelly Finfrock, DeWitt County SWCD Office Manager, says their office is in good shape compared to many similar offices across the state.

State Senator Chapin Rose was a guest speaker at the meeting. He gave an update on the state's fiscal situation from his perspective in Springfield. Senator Rose notes that the next few years could be tough for state agencies, but says he believes there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Even with the state's financial issues, Chairman of the DeWitt SWCD, Myron Kirby, believes the agency is in good shape for the future. He notes the new Illinois Nutrient Loss Reduction Strategy currently being considered by Illinois EPA contains many practices already being implemented by local Soil and Water Districts, and says the local offices are best suited to encourage nutrient loss reduction strategies on the farm.
