No. 25 Illinois Splits Sunday Double-Header in Florida

No. 25 Illinois homered twice on Sunday but fell by one run for the second straight game in the first of a Sunday double header. The Illini led 3-1 until Kent State (5-4) came back with three runs in the sixth and held on for the 4-3 final. UI made three errors that proved costly and the winning run scored on a wild pitch.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, the Illini responded with a run in each of the first three innings. Senior Casey Fletcher tied it up with a homer to right in the bottom of the first, while freshman Mark Skonieczny, who made his first career start at catcher, delivered his first hit and RBI in the second. Reid Roper made it 3-1 with a solo shot in the third.

Rob McDonnell, who suffered his first loss, was charged with three earned runs and struck out five over seven innings.

Seven different Illini tallied a hit, but none had a multi-hit performance. Fletcher and Reid Roper each went deep for the first time this year, giving the Illini six home runs.

Illinois (8-2-1) returned to its winning ways in a game two 2-1 victory over West Virginia (4-6) at TicketReturn.com Field.

Adam Walton scored a run in the first on Reid Roper's RBI groundout and crossed home again in the ninth on Ryan Nagle's game-winning RBI groundout.

Kravetz received a no decision after one of the best starts in his career. He racked up a career-high nine strikeouts over seven scoreless innings, lowering his season ERA to 1.77, scattering four hits and allowed one walk in 103 pitches.

The Illini will close out the tournament with an 11 a.m. CT game on Monday at Coastal Carolina.
