NFL Franchise Tag Notes

>>Chiefs Use Franchise Tag On League Sacks Leader

The Kansas City Chiefs used their franchise tag on reigning NFL sacks leader Justin Houston, the team announced Monday.

Houston will earn $13.195 next season under the franchise tag, according to the widely reported number for linebackers.

The 26-year-old had 22 sacks last season, breaking Hall of Famer Derrick Thomas' single-season franchise record and coming within a half-sack of Michael Strahan's NFL mark.

width=Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said the team will continue to work on a long-term deal for Houston.

>>Giants Franchise Tag DE Pierre-Paul

The New York Giants assigned the non-exclusive franchise tag to defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul at Monday's deadline as the team continues to attempt to work out a long-term deal with its top pass rusher.

Pierre-Paul will earn a $14.8 million salary in 2015 as a franchise player, though the Giants now have until July 15 to negotiate an extension with the 2010 first-round pick by applying the tag.

The 26-year-old is coming off a bounce-back 2014 campaign in which he recorded 12 1/2 sacks and three forced fumbles while starting all 16 games. Pierre-Paul had a career-low two sacks while being limited to 11 games by injuries the previous season.

>>Bryant Gets Cowboys Franchise Tag

The Dallas Cowboys have slapped the franchise tag on wide receiver Dez Bryant.

The designation will keep Bryant off the free agent market and will give him a salary of $12.8 million for the 2015 season. The two sides can still work towards a long-term deal until July 15.

Bryant has emerged as one of the top receivers in the NFL. He caught 88 passes for 1,320 yards and a career-high 16 touchdowns in 2014, following 90-catch seasons in both 2012 and 2013.

In all, the 26-year-old Oklahoma State product has 381 receptions for 5,424 yards and 56 touchdowns in five seasons.
