Central Illinois Man Out To Walk 700 Miles

Eight-four-year-old Dean Troutman is in the second week of a journey that started in his hometown of Princeville, near Peoria. He plans to walk for a 75-day period across the state.

Troutman explains he lost his wife of more than 50 years, Peggy, to Parkinson’s disease in 2010. This walk is a fundraiser for a park in the Princeville community to be constructed in memory of his late wife, Troutman Park.

Troutman says he had a “lot of doubters” before he left, not thinking he’d be able to get 20 miles beyond Princeville. Troutman, who says he recently ran a 5K for a fundraiser for his park, has been active all his life.

Troutman says mostly he’s been staying at firehouses while he travels. He hopes to go as far south as Benton, Illinois, loop around, and return to Princeville, walking about 10 to 20 miles per day.
