Tyler Jay Named Top 30 Candidates For National Award

width=When Illinois relief pitcher Tyler Jay played for the Team USA Collegiate National Team last summer, teammates from traditional power schools talked a lot about who would have the best 2015 season.

Illinois wasn't part of that conversation.

But with 21 straight wins the Illini (40-6-1, 16-1 Big Ten) are talked about a lot now.

Pitching is a big reason but Illinois' bets pitcher might be Jay in its bullpen.

The junior has become Illinois' stopper.

Jay was named to the final USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award watch list, announced USA Baseball Thursday.

Illinois coach Dan Hartleb said having four other quality starters made it easier to put one of the country's top college pitchers in the bullpen.

Hartleb says Jay doesn't care when he pitches as long as he pitches.
