Cubs, Sox Win; Cards Fall To Indians

Chris Coghlan looked at ball four in the dirt and the Chicago Cubs walked off with another win over the New York Mets, 2-1 Wednesday night.

Starters Jason Hammel and Matt Harvey dueled much of the night.

Hammel threw eight strong innings but couldn't pick up his first career win in five starts against the Mets. He struck out six in eight innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk.

Harvey had nine strikeouts in seven shutout innings, yielding just three hits and two walks. He was coming off a loss to Philadelphia on Friday after winning his first five starts since having from Tommy John surgery.

Corey Kluber turned in a historic performance to put his early-season struggles in the rearview.

Kluber (1-5) matched a franchise record with 18 strikeouts and allowed just one hit and no walks over eight innings to lead the Cleveland Indians to a 2-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Cleveland gave Kluber all the run support he needed in the first inning. Jason Kipnis and Carlos Santana drew walks off John Lackey (2-2) to start the inning, and both runners scored on singles from Brandon Moss and David Murphy.

Lackey gave up five hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings.

Avisail Garcia and Adam LaRoche homered in the first inning to back a solid outing from Jose Quintana and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 4-2, in the rubber match of a three- game set.

Quintana (2-3) went seven-plus innings and allowed one run on four hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts.

Melky Cabrera and Emilio Bonifacio each drove in a run for the White Sox, who have won four of their last five.

Jimmy Nelson (1-4) was tagged with the loss after yielding four runs on eight hits over 2/3 innings.
