Adam LaRoche and Gordon Beckham each knocked in runs in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 5-3 decision over Toronto and avoid a three-game series sweep by the Blue Jays.

LaRoche followed Jose Abreu's leadoff triple off Roberto Osuna (1-1) with a single that plated the eventual winning run. Beckham later added an insurance tally with a two-out double that helped Chicago halt a four-game losing streak.

The two big hits enabled a shaky David Robertson (4-1) to record the win despite surrendering a game-tying solo homer to Josh Donaldson in the bottom of the ninth.

Robertson's blown save denied Jeff Samardzija a third straight victorious start after the Chicago righty held the Blue Jays to one unearned run while scattering eight hits over seven strong innings.

Abreu finished 3-for-5 with a two-run double that Toronto center fielder Ezequiel Carrera lost in the sun in the third inning. LaRoche, Beckham and J.B. Shuck each collected two hits and an RBI for the White Sox.

Donaldson had two RBI and Chris Colabello went 3-for-5 for a Toronto team that had amassed 24 runs over a three-game win streak it brought into Wednesday's finale.

Blue Jays starter Marco Estrada worked seven innings and allowed three runs on eight hits.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 on Wednesday.

Jason Heyward hit a homer down the right-field line to welcome Brad Ziegler (0-1) to the mound and even the score at three. Peter Bourjos then singled and moved to second when Kolten Wong grounded out. Matt Carpenter was intentionally walked before Matt Holliday walked to load the bases.

The Diamondbacks set up a five-man infield. Jhonny Peralta hit a grounder to the third baseman who got the forceout at home, but Jordan Pacheco's wild throw to first allowed the winning run to score.

Pacheco replaced Tuffy Gosewisch, who jammed his left knee while trying to beat out a grounder in the sixth.

The Cardinals swept this three-game series and have won four in a row overall.

St. Louis starter Lance Lynn gave up three runs -- two earned -- on six hits with five strikeouts and four walks over six innings. Seth Maness (1-0) recorded the final two outs in the ninth to pick up the win.

Josh Collmenter got the start for Arizona and allowed two runs on six hits over five innings.

Max Scherzer outdueled Jon Lester, Bryce Harper smacked a solo homer and the Washington Nationals blanked the Chicago Cubs 3-0 in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Scherzer (6-3) and Lester (4-3), two of the most coveted free agents this past offseason, combined to strike out 23 batters.

Scherzer fanned 13, scattered five hits and walked just one over seven shutout innings, while Lester surrendered two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and two walks to go with 10 punchouts over seven frames.

The two aces signed with their new clubs for a combined 13 years and $365 million. Both had four wins in May coming in.

Harper's homer was the 13th in his last 19 games.

Danny Espinosa hit a solo shot and Ian Desmond posted three hits for the Nationals, who have won nine of their last 11 games.

Drew Storen blanked the Cubs in the ninth for his 16th save of the season.

Chicago has dropped four of its last six contests.

>>Cardinals' Adams To Miss 3-4 Months

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Matt Adams is expected to miss the next 3-to-4 months while recovering from a severe right quadriceps strain that he suffered running the bases on Tuesday.

He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday.

According to MLB.com, the Cardinals and Adams are still deliberating whether the injury will require surgery.

Mark Reynolds played first base for the Cardinals in Wednesday night's game against the Diamondbacks and will be the primary starter there for the foreseeable future.

The 26-year-old Adams was hitting .243 with four home runs and 20 RBI over 43 games this season.
