Cards, Cubs, Sox Win Thursday

 width=>>Wacha, Cardinals Dominate Dodgers

Jhonny Peralta went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, Michael Wacha threw seven innings of one-run ball, and the St. Louis Cardinals downed the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-1 in a battle of first place teams.

The only loss suffered by Wacha (8-1) this season came against the Dodgers last week, and he rebounded by limiting them to seven hits in the rematch. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.

Jason Heyward and Kolten Wong both had two-run hits, and the NL Central front- runners built off a 7-2 homestand by winning the opener of this four-game set.

Dodgers starter Carlos Frias (4-3) pitched into the seventh inning but not before surrendering five runs -- three earned -- on 10 hits and three walks.

He would have made it out of the third unscathed had it not been for Justin Turner's two-out error. The Cardinals took advantage with three straight singles, with Peralta and Mark Reynolds each driving in a run.

St. Louis tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Matt Holliday plated Wong with a sacrifice fly, and Heyward's two-out, two-run base hit made it 5-0.

Jake Arrieta struck out eight over six strong innings to lift the Chicago Cubs to a 2-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

Arrieta (5-4) allowed one run on six hits with zero walks for the Cubs, who scored both of their runs in the first inning.

The Nationals had runners on first and second with two outs in the ninth, but catcher David Ross picked Washington's Clint Robinson off first base to seal the victory.

Washington starter Gio Gonzalez (4-3) gave up two runs on four hits while striking out six and walking four over six frames. The left-hander had not surrendered an earned run over his previous four starts against the Cubs.

After a 1 hour, 51-minute rain delay, the Cubs scored a pair of runs in the first. Dexter Fowler singled, Kris Bryant walked and Anthony Rizzo singled to load the bases with no outs. Junior Lake walked to force in a run. Another run scored when Starlin Castro grounded into a double play. Gonzalez limited the damage by getting Matt Szczur to ground out.

Anthony Rendon went 2-for-4 in his season debut after missing 53 games with a left knee sprain and a left oblique strain. He started the game at second and moved to third base when Yunel Escobar left after one inning because of an apparent injury. Danny Espinosa came on to play second.

Pedro Strop tossed a scoreless eighth and Hector Rondon closed the door in the ninth for his 10th save of the season.

Shin-Soo Choo drove in the winning run in the 11th inning to lead the Texas Rangers in a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox in the finale of a three-game set.

With Dan Jennings (1-2) on the mound for Chicago, Leonys Martin led off the 11th with a single and was moved to second on a Hanser Alberto sacrifice bunt. After Delino DeShields was issued a free pass, Choo singled to left and Martin came home for the win.

Prince Fielder drove in the other run and Tanner Scheppers (2-0) got the win for a scoreless inning of relief for the Rangers, who have won five of their last six. Yovani Gallardo allowed a run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Gordon Beckham drove in the only run of the game for the White Sox, who have lost three of their last five. Carlos Rodon gave up a run on five hits while walking three and striking out 10 in six innings.

Texas worked a run across in the first inning as DeShields led off with a double and, after Choo walked, scored on a Fielder single. Rodon struck out the next three batters to escape the jam.

National League All-Star manager Bruce Bochy of the San Francisco Giants and American League All-Star skipper Ned Yost of the Kansas City Royals announced on Thursday the managers who will serve as their coaches at the 86th All-Star Game.

One of Bochy's decisions will please the hometown crowd in Cincinnati, host of the contest on July 14, as Bryan Price of the Reds was named to the NL staff, along with Don Mattingly of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Price will be part of an All-Star coaching staff for the first time, while Mattingly previously served on Joe Torre's 2004 AL coaching staff while with the New York Yankees. Mattingly was also a six-time All-Star as a player in New York.

Giants assistant coach Shawon Dunston, bullpen coach Mark Gardner, first base coach Bill Hayes, third base coach Roberto Kelly, batting coach Hensley Meulens, pitching coach Dave Righetti and bench coach Ron Wotus also will join the NL staff at Great American Ball Park.

Paul Lessard, head athletic trainer of the Reds, and Scott Gehret, assistant athletic trainer of the Colorado Rockies, will tend to the NL All-Stars.

Yost selected Houston's A.J. Hinch and Seattle's Lloyd McClendon as his coaches. Hinch, in his first season with the Astros, will make his All-Star coaching debut. McClendon was part of Dusty Baker's NL staff in 2003.

In addition, the coaches from the Royals -- pitching coach Dave Eiland, catching coach Pedro Grifol, bullpen coach Doug Henry, third base coach Mike Jirschele, first base coach Rusty Kuntz, hitting coach Dale Sveum and bench coach Don Wakamatsu -- will work with the AL stars.

Adam Nevala, head athletic trainer of the Los Angeles Angels, and Paul Harker, assistant athletic trainer of the Tampa Bay Rays, will round out the AL staff.
