Cubs Win; Baseball Notes

width=Miguel Montero staked the Cubs to an early lead with a three-run homer and Chicago rode that momentum to a 6-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday at Wrigley Field.

Dexter Fowler went 2-for-4 with a solo homer into the just-opened right-field bleachers, and Travis Wood (3-2) picked up the win in relief of Tsuyoshi Wada, who was pulled after surrendering a leadoff homer to Chris Dominguez in the fourth.

The combination of Wood, Justin Grimm, James Russell, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon retired 15 of the final 16 Reds hitters as Chicago pulled out its fourth win in five games.

Michael Lorenzen (1-2) recorded a two-run triple for the Reds but was not as effective on the mound, giving up all six runs -- five earned -- on five hits over 4 1/3 innings.

An Anthony Rizzo double and Kris Bryant walk set the stage for Montero's home run in the first inning.

Fowler found the right-field seats leading off the third. The famous bleachers were undergoing construction up to this point in a vast renovation plan for the iconic stadium.

>>Nationals Put Slugger Zimmerman on DL

The Washington Nationals have placed Ryan Zimmerman on the 15-day disabled list due to a lingering foot injury that has contributed to the first baseman's struggles at the plate.

Zimmerman has been dealing with plantar fasciitis in his left foot for much of the season, during which the veteran infielder has recorded career lows with a .209 average and a .346 slugging percentage. He was mired in a 1-for-25 slump prior to sitting out Wednesday's series finale against the New York Yankees.

The 30-year-old's 34 RBI still ranks second to Bryce Harper among Nationals players in 2015.

Outfielder Matt den Dekker was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to fill the available roster spot.

>>Nationals Acquire P Carpenter From Yankees

The Washington Nationals acquired right- handed reliever David Carpenter from the New York Yankees on Thursday in exchange for minor league infielder Tony Renda.

Carpenter was designated for assignment by the Yankees on June 3 after posting a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances out of the bullpen. The five-year major league veteran has a career 3.73 ERA in 210 games for Houston, Toronto, Atlanta and the Yankees.

Renda, a second-round pick by Washington in 2012, was hitting .267 in 54 games for Double-A Harrisburg.

The Nationals, in Milwaukee to play the Brewers, activated pitcher Sammy Solis from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to Harrisburg to make room for Carpenter.

They transferred Nate McLouth to the 60-day disabled list as he recovers from right labrum surgery last August.

>>Padres Activate Slugger Myers From DL

The San Diego Padres activated outfielder Wil Myers off the 15-day disabled list Thursday.

Myers had been sidelined with a wrist injury and last played May 11. He missed six games before heading to the DL on May 19 and just completed a three-game minor league rehab stint at Triple-A El Paso, going 5-for-15 with a home run.

In his first season with San Diego, Myers entered Thursday's action batting .291 with five homers and 19 RBI in 32 games. He was acquired from Tampa Bay in the offseason.

The Padres opened a roster spot by optioning pitcher Kevin Quackenbush to El Paso.

>>Yankees Put P Miller on DL, Recall Prospects

The New York Yankees made it official Thursday and placed pitcher Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left forearm.

Miller is expected to be sidelined for at least two weeks because of the injury, leaving the closer role for Dellin Betances.

The Yankees recalled pitcher Chris Martin from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the spot in the bullpen and the need for a right-handed reliever. In addition, New York also recalled outfielder Mason Williams to replace infielder Jose Pirela, who was optioned to the minors after Wednesday's game against Washington.

Pirela became the odd-man out as an infield reserve when Brendan Ryan was activated off the disabled list before Wednesday's game.

The back-end combo of Miller and Betances has played a key role in the Yankees' surge to the top of the American League's East Division. The duo have combined for a stellar 0.61 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings of work this season.

Miller, signed to a four-year, $36 million contract by New York during the offseason, has converted all 17 of his save chances as a Yankee and posted a 1.03 ERA in 26 appearances. Opponents are just 8-for-89 (.090) against him this season.
