Cubs Route Tribe; Sox, Cards Lose

width=>>Cubs Route Tribe Behind 4 Home Runs

Kris Bryant and Chris Denorfia hit two of the Chicago Cubs' four home runs in a 17-0 rout of the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night.

Bryant clubbed a grand slam off a position player to cap a seven-run ninth inning, while Denorfia hit a three-run shot and an RBI double.

Tsuyoshi Wada (1-1) and Yoervis Medina combined on a four-hit shutout. Wada scattered four singles over seven innings with two walks and six strikeouts.

With the game out of reach and the bullpen all but empty, Cleveland manager Terry Francona used utility player Ryan Raburn and outfielder David Murphy to pitch the ninth.

>>Pirates Keep Rolling With Win Over White Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates finally gave up a run but nevertheless ran their winning streak to a season high-tying seven games with a 3-2 victory over the struggling Chicago White Sox on Wednesday.

width=The Pirates posted shutouts in five of their previous six games, including two of the White Sox at PNC Park, and saw Jeff Locke run the team's scoreless streak to 35 innings before Chicago pushed two across in the sixth.

Locke (4-3) limited the damage to those two runs while striking out eight and scattering three hits and two walks. Arquimedes Caminero, Tony Watson and Mark Melancon each pitched a scoreless inning of relief behind Locke.

Jung-Ho Kang's two-run homer in the first inning spoiled an otherwise solid start from John Danks (3-7), who lasted seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

The White Sox, losers in six straight, came in getting outscored an MLB-worst 53-19 in the opening frame and went down 3-0 just four batters into the game.

Josh Harrison led off with a double and scored on Andrew McCutchen's one-out base hit, and Kang went the other way for his fourth home run of the season.

Locke set down the first nine Chicago hitters and allowed just one hit through five innings. The left-hander nearly retired the side in order in the sixth, but Adam Eaton took a payoff pitch off the plate to earn a two-out walk.

Melky Cabrera smacked a double down the third-base line, and Eaton scored easily from first to end Pittsburgh's lengthy scoreless streak.

The run was also the White Sox's first in 31 innings, and after Jose Abreu walked, Avisail Garcia singled home Cabrera to get Chicago within a run.

Locke, though, retired Adam LaRoche, and Pittsburgh's bullpen closed out the win. Melancon pitched a 1-2-3 ninth and collected his 22nd save.

 width=>>Minnesota Edges St. Louis

Tommy Milone pitched seven strong innings, and Eduardo Nunez drove in a couple runs in the Minnesota Twins' 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.

Milone (3-1) allowed St. Louis to go on top in the second frame, but he retired 17 of the final 19 he faced on his way to a one-run, seven-inning outing with five strikeouts and no walks.

Nunez's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning provided the go-ahead run, and he beat out an infield hit in the eighth to add an insurance run.

Glen Perkins recorded the sixth save of four outs or more in his career despite allowing back-to-back singles to start the ninth.

Carlos Martinez (7-3) took the loss after having won four straight decisions. He allowed two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.

St. Louis went ahead in the second inning when Mark Reynolds led off with a double and Jason Heyward's single brought him home.

The Twins answered in the fourth. Trevor Plouffe led off with a double and moved up to third on Eddie Rosario's single. With Nunez at the plate, Reynolds dropped a pickoff attempt at first, allowing Plouffe to score and Rosario to reach third base. Nunez then hit a sacrifice fly to put Minnesota in front 2-1.

Milone settled in and did not yield much the rest of the way. Heyward's leadoff single in the fifth was erased on Peter Bourjos' double play, and Yadier Molina was thrown out to end the seventh when he tried extending his single into a double.
