Lester Seeking First Win in 6 Starts

Jon Lester eyes his first win in six starts on Saturday when the Chicago Cubs play the middle test of their three-game series with the Minnesota Twins at Target Field.

Lester is 0-3 in his last four appearances, but pitched well enough to get the win on Sunday against Cincinnati, as he allowed just a run and five hits in seven innings. However, he did not factor in the decision of his team's 2-1 win and is 4-5 on the year with a 3.99 ERA.

"Tonight was better. Tonight was back to being me," Lester said. "Any time you have two starts like I did [before Sunday], you're going to have some mental questions, you're going to have some doubts and sit there going, 'What am I doing wrong?' You have to believe in what you've done, and what I've done in the past, and what's gotten me here."

Lester has faced the Twins 11 times (10 starts) and is 3-4 against them with a 3.86 ERA.

Minnesota, meanwhile, will counter with righty Trevor May, who is 4-5 with a 4.26 ERA. May lost his second straight start on Monday in St. Louis, as he allowed three runs and five hits in five innings.

"Today I didn't do my job as well as I should. It was a little frustrating," May said. "I left a couple of balls up to some guys, and a couple times I made good pitches and they hit them. That's kind of the name of the game. I wish I had a couple back, but that's how things go sometimes."

On Friday, Trevor Plouffe doubled twice and drove in four runs to power Minnesota to a 7-2 victory. Brian Dozier and Eddie Rosario each finished with two hits and two runs scored and Eduardo Escobar also drove in a run for the Twins, who have won three in a row.

Phil Hughes (5-6) was brilliant in his eight innings on the mound, permitting just one run and two hits while striking out four and walking none.

"Tonight he was excellent," Plouffe said of Hughes. "Whenever he's on the mound, we know we have a good chance."

Anthony Rizzo hit two solo home runs for the Cubs, who have dropped their last two games and three of their last four.

Kyle Hendricks (2-3) gave up seven runs -- six earned -- on 11 hits over five- plus innings in defeat.

"I just wasn't making pitches. I just didn't have it today," Hendricks said. "I need to expand more early."

Minnesota last faced the Cubs back in 2012 when it took two of three from them.
