University of Illinois Projects Higher Freshman Class

University Of Illinois officials say initial data suggests enrollment is up for the incoming freshman class, including more Illinois residents and minority students.

Reports indicate, the number of students who've accepted admission increased 8 percent from this time last year. Chuck Tucker, vice provost for undergraduate education, says that includes 12 percent more state residents.

The number of black students planning to attend is 35 percent higher than a year ago. There's also a 14 percent increase in Latino students.

The university has been criticized for a declining black student population, which was below 5 percent last year. The Illinois resident population had also declined, from nearly 90 percent in 2004 to 71 percent last fall.

Officials say they've taken steps to draw students, including more scholarships.
