South Carolina board approves extension for Staley

South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley will make a guaranteed salary of $1.1 million next season under terms of a two-year contract extension approved Friday by the school's board of trustees.

Staley, who was hired in May 2008, led the Gamecocks to the first Final Four appearance in program history this past season.

The new two-year deal extended Staley's contract through the 2020-21 season and included a $200,000 raise.

The former WNBA star and three-time Olympic gold medalist has led a turnaround in her seven seasons at South Carolina, which finished in the top five in the SEC just twice in 11 seasons before her arrival.

The Gamecocks have won the last two regular-season SEC titles and captured the team's first SEC Tournament championship this year.
