Sen. Durbin Teams Up With Congresswoman Duckworth For Military Legislation

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth are calling for new tools to shield military members from businesses they say are engaging in abusive financial practices.

New legislation filed by Duckworth in the House would empower the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to oversee and enforce compliance with certain existing provisions of the Service Member Civil Relief Act (SCRA). That act was designed to protect the finances of military members during times of deployment.

Duckworth, who lost her legs while piloting a military helicopter in Iraq, says predatory practices hurt the troops and the military as a whole.

Durbin says the legislation would add teeth to efforts to enforce consumer protections for military personnel.

Durbin has co-sponsored similar legislation in the Senate.
