Cubs Win; Cards Fall In 18 Innings; Sox Lose

>>Mets Outlast Cardinals In Another Marathon Between the Two Foes

width=Ruben Tejada's sacrifice fly in the 18th inning helped the New York Mets end a marathon game in a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday.

New York loaded the bases with two singles and an error by pitcher Carlos Martinez (10-4) on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Kevin Plawecki. Tejada then sent a sac fly into right that gave the Mets the lead, and Eric Campbell executed a safety squeeze a batter later for a two-run edge.

Carlos Torres (3-4) picked up the win for two scoreless innings of relief.

Curtis Granderson opened the 13th with a double off Carlos Villanueva, then Plawecki followed with a single to right for the game's first run. Villanueva maneuvered out of a bases-loaded jam later in the inning to keep it a one-run game.

That proved to be huge for the Cardinals because Kolten Wong started the home 13th with a solo homer off Jeurys Familia down the right-field line.

Each team had a chance to plate a run in the fifth but came up empty. Tejada doubled with one out before Jon Niese and Juan Lagares struck out. Tim Cooney's two-out single in the home fifth put runners at the corners prior to Wong lining out to center.

Seth Maness relieved Cooney with the bases loaded in the sixth and got Plawecki to go down swinging for the final out.

Daniel Murphy led off the 10th inning with a single and was on third with two outs when Wilmer Flores grounded a pitch to second baseman Wong, who skipped a throw to Mark Reynolds but the latter made the scoop to keep the game scoreless.

Jenrry Mejia escaped a jam in the 11th by inducing a double play from Yadier Molina with runners at the corners.

>>Cubs Beat Braves

width=Jorge Soler homered to help the Chicago Cubs in a 4-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

Jonathan Herrera had a pair of RBI for the Cubs, who took two of three in the series against Atlanta.

Jake Arrieta (11-5) tossed seven scoreless innings and struck out 10 in the win.

Shelby Miller (5-6) allowed three runs -- one earned -- with eight strikeouts in six innings of work for Atlanta, which has lost seven of its last eight.

Chicago took a 2-0 lead after two innings in large part because of an error by second baseman Jace Peterson. Chris Coghlan singled with one out and Starlin Castro reached on Peterson's throwing error. Arrieta struck out after David Ross walked to load the bases, but Miller couldn't get out of trouble as Herrera singled up the middle.

Soler homered with two outs in the third to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead. Chicago tacked on another run in the ninth on Coghlan's RBI double.

Andrelton Simmons put the Braves on the board with an RBI double in the home ninth to account for the final margin.

>>Duffy Sends Royals Over Sox

width=Danny Duffy's eight-plus outstanding innings and home runs from Lorenzo Cain and Paulo Orlando led the Kansas City Royals to a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Duffy (4-4) was superb in the longest outing of his career, carrying a shutout into the ninth inning and limiting the White Sox to six hits and one walk while recording 14 outs on the ground.

Tyler Saladino spoiled the shutout bid by belting his first major league homer to begin the bottom of the ninth.

Orlando aided Duffy's cause with a two-run homer off Chicago ace Chris Sale and Cain kept up his hot hitting with a solo blast. Eric Hosmer chipped in three more hits, including an RBI single, to help the Royals to their third win of this four-game set.

Sale (8-5) wasn't at his best in his first start after the All-Star break, permitting a season-high 11 hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Sale was particularly off early on, as three of the first four Kansas City batters reached base to produce the game's initial run. After Alcides Escobar and Mike Moustakas opened with back-to-back soft singles, Hosmer ripped a base hit up the middle to stake the Royals to a 1-0 edge.

The standout left-hander briefly settled down to keep Kansas City off the board over the next four innings, and had retired seven straight hitters until Cain led off the sixth with his second homer in as many days.

Duffy was able to protect the lead with clutch pitching and help from a defense that turned two double plays over the first four innings. He got into his biggest jam in the sixth, when Carlos Sanchez and Adam Eaton both singled to put two on with none out.

Saladino then dropped down a bunt and was originally called safe on Duffy's error, but Royals manager Ned Yost successfully challenged the ruling when replays showed Hosmer kept his foot on the bag while taking the throw. Duffy proceeded to strike out Jose Abreu and Melky Cabrera to strand two in scoring position and keep the Royals up 2-0.

Orlando extended the margin a half-inning later by hammering a Sale fastball over the center-field wall with Alex Rios aboard.

Duffy followed up his two big strikeouts in the sixth by firing 1-2-3 innings in both the seventh and eighth. After Saladino reached the seats to start the ninth, Joe Blanton set down the next three hitters to record his first career save.
