Illinois adding collections to national digital library

Collections from libraries across Illinois will soon be added to the nation's online library.

Secretary of State Jesse White - who's also the state librarian - announced Friday the Illinois State Library will become a "service hub" for the Digital Public Library of America.

The digital library was launched in 2013. It includes almost 11 million books, historical records and images from museums, libraries and archives across the U.S.

Users may access the materials online for free.

White says the Illinois State Library will work with the Chicago Public Library, the University of Illinois and academic and research libraries to contribute collections to the digital library. They'll be available in early 2016.

White says putting items online will ensure future generations "will have more convenient access to Illinois' rich history."
