Mets Harvey To Make 2 More Starts Before Playoffs

Since Jon Heyman's column on Mets starter Matt Harvey and an innings-limit controversy on Friday, the news has dominated headlines.

The most recent turn was Harvey stating that he plans to pitch in the playoffs Sunday evening. On Monday morning -- in front of a huge three-game series against the second-place Nationals in DC -- Mets general manager Sandy Alderson discussed the Harvey situation with local reporters.

width=The basics are that it sounds like the Mets will definitely start Harvey against the Nationals and then skip him a few times to extend him toward the end of the season.

With Steven Matz off the disabled list, the Mets have gone to a six-man rotation, so they could easily absorb skipping Harvey a few times, at least in terms of having an able-bodied replacement. Following a Tuesday start against Washington, Harvey was next scheduled to face the Marlins on Sept. 14 and then the Braves on Sept. 21. It sounds like the Mets will sit him for those starts and then play it by ear until the final series against the Nationals.

The Mets face the Nationals in the final three games of the season. If the two clubs are within three games of each other, those are like playoff games and Alderson indicated Harvey would be used then.

If not, it sounds like it's possible Tuesday is the last time we see Harvey until the playoffs, if the Mets make it.

Harvey, 26, is 12-7 with a 2.60 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 158 strikeouts in 166 1/3 innings this season. The number of 180 innings is what is being tossed around as Harvey's soft "limit" this season, his first since returning from Tommy John surgery.
