Bears, Packers WRs Return To Practice

Chicago Bears receiver Alshon Jeffery practiced Wednesday for the first time in nearly a month after being sidelined by a left calf injury.

Whether he will be ready for this weekend's season opener against the Green Bay Packers is not clear. But practicing even on a limited basis was a big step for the former Pro Bowl receiver.

Jeffery had not practiced since Aug. 11 and sat out the preseason.

Coach John Fox says it was "encouraging to see him out there."

Receiver Randall Cobb has returned to practice for the Green Bay Packers after missing the last week of the preseason with a sprained right shoulder.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers' top receiver took part in special teams and position drills during a portion of practice open to media on Wednesday. Cobb was hurt on Aug. 29 during a preseason loss to Philadelphia.

Coach Mike McCarthy had said he expected all 53 players on the active roster to practice as Green Bay gets ready for the season opener on Sunday against the Chicago Bears.

Guard T.J. Lang (concussion) also returned to practice. Safety Morgan Burnett did not participate in the open part of practice. Burnett sat out the last preseason game with a calf injury.

>>Former Bears WR Marshall Says Race is a Factor in NFL Discipline

If Brandon Marshall has made one thing clear during his nine-year career, it's that he's not afraid to share his opinion, and the Jets wide receiver did exactly that during the season premiere of Showtime's Inside the NFL on Tuesday.

During a discussion about Deflategate with co-panelists Boomer Esiason and Phil Simms, Marshall said that he -- and other players -- believe race played a factor in Tom Brady's suspension getting overturned on Sept. 3.

Marshall said quote-"There are a lot of players out there that believe that white players -- specifically, at the quarterback position -- are treated differently".

Marshall said that most NFL players felt one of three ways about Brady's suspension. No. 1 is the fighter. There are guys in the fight with Tom [Brady].

Marshall's second group consists of players who wanted to see Brady suspended.

Marshall said the third group was players who thought Brady got off because of "the race card."

Esiason was quick to interject after Marshall made his point.

"So you're telling me that there are players out there -- and I don't know if you believe this -- that there are players out there, that if this were Cam Newton, that his suspension would be upheld. And he would be there, that the judge would see Cam Newton differently because of the color of his skin?"

The Jets receiver said quote-"well, when you look back at the history of this sport, you can build a case on that, yes,"

Marshall made sure to emphasize that this wasn't just his opinion, it was also the opinion of other NFL players.
