Governor Reacts To Low Marks in Civil Courts

A new survey of business attorneys and executives ranks Illinois as one of the three worst states in perceived fairness of civil courts to businesses.

The 2015 Lawsuit Climate Survey is the product of the U.S. Chamber Institute for Legal Reform. Governor Bruce Rauner says Metro-east and Chicago courtrooms continue to show a bias in favor of plaintiffs and offer excessive judgements. Rauner says the current environment is opening the door for companies to leave the state while closing the door on new ones.

Seventy-five percent of those surveyed said a state's litigation environment is likely to influence business decisions, including where to locate.

The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association says curtailing lawsuits only hurts middle-income Americans who depend on courts to get a fair day in court in their complaints against businesses.
