Shelbyville Thumps Maroons In CIC Opener

In a game heard Friday night on 1520AM / 92.3FM WHOW, the Clinton Maroons fell to the visiting Shelbyville Rams 52-7 in the Central Illinois Conference opener for both teams.

Both teams came into the contest with 2-0 records in non-conference play, but Shelbyville's potent offense was too much for the Maroons.  The Rams were able to consistently convert on 3rd down throughout the contest.  That, plus Clinton's 6 turnovers were too much for the Maroons to overcome.

Alec Cooley once again led the Maroons offense with 15 carries for 194 yards, including an 86-yard touchdown run.  Noah Griffin had a rough day behind center.  He was sacked early and pressured often.  Griffin ended up 8 of 14 passing for 70 yards and 2 interceptions.  Bad snaps also resulted in 3 Clinton fumbles.

The Stephan York Country Financial Maroons Player of the Game was Collin Underwood, who was one of the Maroons top tacklers on the night.

Shelbyville was led by Sophomore quarterback Turner Pullen, who was 10 of 23 passing for 165 yards and a touchdown.  He also ran 11 times for 71 yards and 2 TDs.

The Rams also leaned heavily on Senior running back Garrett Brachbill, who carried the ball 22 times for 151 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Clinton will look to regroup, and go on the road next Friday to Central A&M.  You can hear that game on 1520AM / 92.3FM WHOW and streamed online at DeWittDailyNews.com.
