College Football: Baylor Closing in On Ohio State in For No. 1 in AP; Michigan Moves Up In Coaches Poll

Even as first-place votes are redistributed elsewhere, Ohio State has kept its hold on the No. 1 spot in the Associated Press Top 25. The Buckeyes pulled away late against Maryland in a game that was much closer than the 49-28 final suggests.

width=The result in the AP Top 25 was more momentum for Baylor, which jumped TCU for the No. 2 spot and now has 13 first-place votes. Only Utah, with 16 first-place votes but sitting at No. 4, also seems to be in position to overtake Ohio State for the top spot.

Alabama was in trouble against Arkansas, trailing 7-3 in the third quarter, before Jake Coker rebounded from a rough start and led the Tide to a 27-14 win. That victory kept Nick Saban's group in the top 10 (though down two spots to No. 10) along with LSU, Florida and Texas A&M, giving the SEC four teams in the top 10, though none in the top five.

On a weekend where several top teams were tested, two name-brand programs with title expectations were not lucky enough to emerge unscathed.

Georgia was ranked No. 16 in the coaches poll heading into Neyland Stadium against a dangerous Tennessee team. The Bulldogs not only lost star running back Nick Chubb to a scary leg injury -- Mark Richt said he is "optimistic" Chubb will not need surgery -- but lost their spot in the SEC East title picture and the Top 25. The other team of note to fall this weekend was Oklahoma, losing to Texas in what was the biggest win of the Charlie Strong era in Austin. The Sooners did not fall out of the Top 25, hanging on at No. 19.

Michigan saw the biggest move up in the Coaches poll this week after a third straight shutout win, moving up seven spots to No. 14 and setting up a huge gave in Week 7 against No. 4 Michigan State.
