RECAP: Maroons Defeat Meridian

In a game heard Friday night on 92.3FM WHOW, the Clinton Maroons used a stellar rushing attack to down the Meridian Hawks, 40-14.

Clinton fell behind the winless Hawks early, trailing 14-7 early in the second quarter, but the Maroons were able to turn things around and score 5 unaswered touchdowns to bring home their fourth win of the season.

Alec Cooley led the Maroons rushing attack.  The Junior carried the ball 23 times for 233 yards and 4 touchdowns.  He now has over 1500 yards rushing on the season, and 19 rushing touchdowns.  Junior Quarterback Noah Griffin added 5 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown in the win.  Griffin was 4 of 6 passing for 53 yards and an interception.

Meridian was led by Sophomore running back Gage Holgarth with 19 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown.  The Hawks' Junior Quarterback Clint Hennington rushed 8 times for 39 yards and a score.  He was 8 of 18 passing for 73 yards, and a pick.

Junior Linebacker Dalton Whitted was the Stephan York Country Financial Maroons Player of the Game.  He had a standout game on defense totalling 2 sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery to go along with numerous tackles.

The win puts Clinton at 4-4 on the season, and 2-4 in the Central Illinois Conference.  It also keeps the Maroons playoff hopes alive heading into next week's Senior Night matchup with Sullivan.  

Meridian is 0-8 on the year, and 0-6 in the CIC.

The game was the first ever to be played at the new football stadium at Meridian High School.
