Cavs, Former Lottery Pick Tristan Thompson Reach Agreement

Tristan Thompson and the Cleveland Cavaliers finally have a deal, as first reported by the Cleveland Plain Dealer's Chris Haynes and confirmed by agent Rich Paul to Yahoo Sports' Marc Spears. The forward has agreed to re-sign for five years and $82 million.

width=Thompson and the Cavaliers had been in a standoff after reportedly being "close" to an agreement on the first day of free agency. At training camp, LeBron James -- a fellow Paul client -- called the situation "a distraction," and said that Thompson had "extreme" value to the Cavs.

The dollar value here means that Cleveland does indeed consider him extremely valuable, even though he is arguably a luxury for a team that signed Kevin Love to a long-term deal.

While Thompson -- an excellent offensive rebounder and mobile big man -- doesn't fit the profile of a typical $82 million man, the contract isn't totally crazy. That's because Thompson would have the opportunity to make as much if not more next summer, when the salary cap increases, and the Cavs want to give themselves the best chance possible to win the title this year.

Even if Thompson spends the next five years coming off the bench, Cleveland is a better and more versatile team with him on the roster.
