Redfield On Upcoming Meeting Between Lawmakers

A longtime political analyst says a scheduled public meeting between the Governor and legislative leaders may sound like a good idea but is full of pitfalls.

Retired University of Illinois, Springfield, politics professor Kent Redfield says it’s unrealistic to have serious negotiations in public because any quote “horse trading” would more than likely happen behind closed doors. Redfield also says there’s the problem of politicians wanting play to the cameras.

Redfield says there could be problems with the meeting if the Governor takes over the agenda and says the big news will come from the quote “talks around the talks”.

Governor Bruce Rauner called for a meeting next month in either Springfield or Chicago with the four legislative leaders to work on the budget impasse alongside structural reforms.
