Limited Reaction on Term Limit Proposal

There’s been very little reaction to the actual proposal to place term limits on legislative leaders with responses focusing more on term limits for all lawmakers.
A measure filed earlier this week by a Senate Democrat would amend the state constitution to limit legislative leaders to only 8 years. Governor Bruce Rauner has made term limits of all state lawmakers a key reform item of his Turnaround Agenda.

In response to the proposal for term limits on legislative leaders, Rauner’s office says he supports term limits for all lawmakers.

A statement for both Senate and House Republican leadership says Republican legislators have introduced numerous pieces of legislation to bring term limits to the General Assembly that were bottled up by the Democrat majority.

A spokesman for Speaker Michael Madigan, who’s served as Speaker of the House for over three decades, said he didn’t have a comment. Senate President John Cullerton’s office said the Senate President will review the bill with the sponsor.
