The 25-year-old Leathersich had Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in July. He was 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA with 17 relief appearances for New York last season, his first in the majors.

The Cubs also agreed to a contract for next season with right-hander Andury Acevedo on Thursday. He spent the past four years in the New York Yankees organization and reached Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre last season.

The moves put the Cubs' 40-man roster at 32.

Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper has been named National League MVP for 2015. MLB revealed the results of the BBWAA balloting on Thursday, and Harper was the unanimous choice.

This year, Harper, 23, batted .330/.460/.649 (195 OPS+) with 42 homers in 153 games for the second-place Nats. As well, Harper led the majors in OBP, SLG, OPS, and OPS+, and he led the National League in home runs and runs scored. Add up all facets of his value, and his 9.9 WAR leads the majors.

Harper becomes just the 13th player to win an MVP at age 23 or younger. The last to do it was Mike Trout in 2014.

Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson has been named American League MVP for 2015. MLB revealed the results of the BBWAA balloting on Thursday.

Donaldson, 29, batted .297/.371/.568 (155 OPS+) with 41 home runs and 41 doubles in 158 games for the AL East champs. As well, Donaldson led the AL in RBI, total bases, and extra-base hits and led the majors in runs scored. On top of that, Donaldson also provided plus fielding at the hot corner. His 8.8 WAR in 2015 ranked second to only Mike Trout in the AL.

The Jays acquired Donaldson from the Athletics in November of 2014 in a five-player trade that sent Brett Lawrie and some notable prospects to Oakland.
