Heyworth Schools Set Levy; Local Development Key To Positive Finances

The possibility of a property tax freeze in Springfield has left many school districts in central Illinois scrambling.

One district that says they are fortunate to not be scrambling is Heyworth in McLean County. Superintendent of schools, Dr. Ty Wolf, says they have been the fortunate benefactor of local development, which is allowing them to keep their tax levy stable.

The idea of a tax freeze has forced many districts to find ways to increase their revenue base, but Dr. Wolf indicates, that is something they have been working on for a number of years through implementing new programs and decreasing expenditures.

Dr. Wolf sees the property tax freeze legislation as an elimination of more funds to local schools. He explains a property tax freeze would pile on to the fact the state already doesn't distribute money they are constitutionally obligated to.

In recent years, Heyworth school leaders have saved almost a half-million through changes to their health insurance and around $100-thousand through adjustments to their lunch program.

He says economizing has helped the district a great deal.
