Governor Rauner Does Not Want Taxpayers Bailing Out Chicago Without Reforms

Illinois taxpayers won’t be on the hook to bail out the city of Chicago unless the Windy City ponies up support for the governor’s reform items.

That’s the message from Governor Bruce Rauner. The governor said Monday that Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has inherited a mess, but -- along with the Cook County government -- hasn’t taken on structural reforms. Rauner said he’ll work with the city to solve problems but won’t provide hundreds of millions of dollars in state assistance without support from city leaders for reforms.

According to social media accounts Mayor Emanuel said Tuesday children of Chicago are not part of the political game in Springfield.

In response, Rauner Deputy Chief of Staff for Communications Mike Schrimpf said Emanuel is quote “playing the tired political game of blaming others for his unwillingness to fix Chicago’s finances after more than four years in office.”

The governor said Chicago has been financially mismanaged for years and the public schools are headed for disaster within the next 9 months.
