Mets To Retire Piazza's No. 31

width=Mike Piazza will be enshrined into Cooperstown's Baseball Hall of Fame and now the Mets will retire his number 31.

The Mets made the announcement in a press release Monday. The ceremony for Piazza will take place in Citi Field on Saturday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m. before they play host to the Rockies.

Piazza becomes the fourth man to have his jersey number retired for the Mets, but only the second player after Tom Seaver (41). Managers Casey Stengel (37) and Gil Hodges (14) have also had their numbers retired and, of course, Jackie Robinson's 42 is retired throughout baseball.

No one has worn 31 since Piazza left the club after the 2005 season and now no one will ever wear it again.

In parts of eight seasons with the Mets, Piazza hit .296/.373/.542 (136 OPS+) with 193 doubles, 220 homers and 655 RBI. He led them to the NLCS twice and World Series once.
