Republicans Plan To Fund Higher Education Includes Governor Fund Sweep Approval

Republicans are looking to give the governor authority to do more fund sweeps to help pay for MAP grants and higher education.

Democratic Representative Kelly Burke said a measure Democrats support to fund MAP grants doesn’t include a revenue stream outside of what the state is currently bringing in.

Republican Representative Tim Butler says passing a bill without a revenue stream is a bad idea. Butler says there’s another measure that would allow the governor to sweep funds, an unpopular practice, but something the Springfield-area lawmaker says is needed right now.

Regardless of the Republican’s plan, the Democrats’ bill passed 67-42 and now heads to the Senate.
