Blues, Blackhawks Lose; Pietrangelo Out for St. Louis

Martin Jones made 33 saves for his fifth shutout and Patrick Marleau scored a power-play goal in the second period to lead the San Jose Sharks past the Chicago Blackhawks 2-0 on Tuesday night.

Joe Thornton added a long empty-netter with 1:42 left.

Marleau's goal, on the Sharks' only man advantage, ended his six-game drought and was just his second in his last 17. But it was all the offense San Jose needed to improve to 18-8-2 on the road, best in the Western Conference.

The Sharks, who ended Chicago's three-game winning streak, are 10-2-2 in their last 14.

Jones rebounded to earn his 12th career shutout after allowing five goals on 29 shots in a 6-2 loss at Nashville on Saturday. He is 9-2-1 in his last 12 starts and 16-5-2 on the road.

>>Winnipeg Tops St. Louis in Shootout

Mark Scheifele scored the lone shootout goal in the fourth round, his first in four career attempts, and the Winnipeg Jets pulled out a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night.

Dustin Byfuglien had an assist a day after signing a $38 million, five-year contract extension with the Jets, who are 4-0-1 in their last five on the road, including a victory at Colorado on Saturday.

Brian Elliott made 32 saves in regulation and overtime for the Blues, held to one goal or none in five of their last six games. Colton Parayko ended a 20-game goal drought in the second period for St. Louis, which is in third in the Central with 69 points - 18 ahead of Winnipeg.

Elliott's glove save on Blake Wheeler was perhaps the top play of a scoreless first period, but the goalie couldn't handle a high rebound and paid for it when Little had a tap-in to put the Jets in front 15 seconds into the second.

Scheifele has 12 goals on the season and has a point in all five games since missing 11 of 14 games with injuries. He scored on a high drive in the shootout after Elliott made pad saves on Wheeler, Andrew Ladd and Little.

>>Blues, Blackhawks Could Play in 2017 Winter Classic

The 2017 Winter Classic could be headed to Busch Stadium in St. Louis, according to a report on Saturday evening from Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

The NHL has yet to announce its schedule of outdoor games for the 2016-17 season (something it has usually done by this point) but rumored matchups are already starting to leak out with Friday's report of a potential Penguins-Flyers matchup leading the way.

Now comes word out of St. Louis that the league is finalizing discussions to send an outdoor game to the city and that the St. Louis Cardinals are expecting to host an outdoor game on Jan. 2.

According to the report the Chicago Blackhawks could be the Blues' opponent in the outdoor game, which would be their fifth outdoor game, more than any other team in the NHL.

Including this year's upcoming outdoor game Colorado, the Blackhawks have played in two Winter Classics and two Stadium Series games, hosting one of each. They have played in one outdoor game in each of the past three seasons, and if they participate in one next year it would make four in a row.

>>Blues Pietrangelo Out At Least Three Weeks

Blues defensemen had to shoulder a heavier load in their first game without Alex Pietrangelo, out at least three weeks with a right knee injury. Pietrangelo is fourth in the NHL averaging 26:40 on the ice per game, and Kevin Shattenkirk stepped up with 27:54 against Winnipeg.
