Tennessee Signee Arrested on Assault, Strangulation Charges

Tennessee defensive tackle Alexis Johnson has been suspended by the program after being arrested Wednesday night on charges of aggravated assault and false imprisonment, as first reported by the Knoxville News-Sentinel.

Johnson, a junior college transfer, allegedly choked the victim -- a woman he had dated previously -- after "play fighting" turned violent. A witness in the report said it also appeared that he had punched the victim and that she had a busted lip.

“We are aware of the report concerning Alexis Johnson,” said Tennessee spokesperson Ryan Roberson. “He has been suspended from all football activities. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Johnson played last season at Fort Scott Community College and signed with the Volunteers in December as a four-star juco recruit.

This is just the latest in a run of bad news coming out of Tennessee, coming just a day after former offensive lineman Mack Crowder was arrested in a "minor" sex sting and a week after a Title IX lawsuit was filed against the school for allegedly creating a "hostile sexual environment" that favors student-athletes.
