Kansas No. 1 in Polls, Beats Texas For Outright Big 12 Title

Kansas has taken over as the new No. 1 team in the country after a week of competitive conference play put the AP Top 25 through a blender, emerging with many of the same ingredients and a slightly different look. The Jayhawks received 63 of the potential 65 first-place votes (Michigan State took the other two) on the way to re-taking a spot they held for two weeks in January.

Seven of the top ten teams in last week's poll lost this week, but the shake up didn't really do a ton to change the perspective of the AP voters in terms of college basketball's pecking order. Sure, Villanova's loss to Xavier dropped the Wildcats out of that No. 1 spot the program was exhilarated to hold, but Jay Wright's team is still in the top five at No. 3.

Arizona and Iowa dropped nine spots and eight spots, respectively, but remained in the rankings while while Utah was one of the biggest risers, up nine spots to No. 13. Only one team dropped out of the poll: Notre Dame, ranked No. 23 last week, dropped out of the poll, making room for a Cal, the polls only new addition at No. 25.

So while college basketball seems crazier than ever with ranked teams losing in these competitive conference games at the end of February, the top teams have already separated themselves. Now the fun begins outside the polls and in the brackets, where seeding and matchups will determine the chances of title contention.

Over the last week, Kansas has beat Baylor on the road and Texas Tech at home to clinch its 12th-straight Big 12 title. And with that, the Jayhawks have now ascended to the top spot in the coaches poll this week.

Kansas garnered 31 of the 32 possible first-place votes in the poll to become the new No. 1. Villanova, after losing to Xavier over the weekend, only fell one spot to No. 2, followed by Michigan State at No. 3, Virginia at No. 4, and Xavier at No. 5. Below them comes Oklahoma, Miami and North Carolina, meaning five of the top-eight teams in the country are coming off of a loss last week.

That's just the reality of this college basketball season, at this point.

The biggest mover in the poll this week was Utah, who jumped from No. 23 to No. 13 after beating the Arizona schools at home. More than their performance over the last week, this seems to be a reassessment of what the Utes have done this season. Utah is sitting just a half-game behind No. 10 Oregon in the Pac-12 standings, and very well may end up winning the league if they can hold their home floor against Colorado given that Oregon has a tough trip to Los Angeles this weekend.

On the other side of the ledger, Iowa and Arizona were the two biggest fallers of the weekend after losing a pair of games last week. Iowa fell seven spots to No. 15 after losing to Wisconsin and Ohio State, and Arizona dropped to No. 16 after being defeated in a pair of road games. Notre Dame, Dayton and Providence also fell out of the rankings, and were replaced by Wichita State, Saint Mary's and California in the final three spots.

Perry Ellis scored 20 points and top-ranked Kansas rolled over No. 23 Texas 86-56 on Monday night, an emphatic exclamation point that clinched the outright Big 12 championship for the Jayhawks.

Kansas had already earned at least a share of a 12th straight crown and settled the question of whether they would get to claim it as their own in the opening minutes with a barrage of 3-pointers, a steady diet of points from Ellis and defense that gave Texas nothing easy.

The Jayhawks (26-4, 14-3) made 11 3-pointers, led by 24 points by halftime and sent Texas' sellout home crowd headed to the exits early. Ellis finished 9 of 11 from the field.

Frank Mason III added 14 points for Kansas.

Javan Felix scored 13 points for Texas (19-11, 10-7), which has never beaten a No. 1-ranked opponent in nine tries.

The Longhorns' offense stalled mostly because Isaiah Taylor never got started. The point guard has been the catalyst for Texas all season - he's their leading scorer - but started 0-for-8 shooting and missed several open looks. Taylor didn't score until making a steal and a layup with 1:26 left in the first half.
