Flyers' VandeVelde has Hearing for Elbowing Blackhawks Player

The Philadelphia Flyers picked up a huge win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night to move ahead of the Detroit Red Wings for a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference playoff race. It could turn out to be a costly win for one of their players.

Late in the first period of their win, forward Chris Vandevelde was given a two-minute minor penalty for elbowing Chicago Blackhawks captain (and his former college teammate at the University of North Dakota) Jonathan Toews in the side of the head along the boards. He could be facing additional punishment from the league in the form of a suspension.

The NHL's department of player safety announced on Thursday that Vandevelde will have a hearing on Friday for elbowing and an illegal check to the head of Toews.

Vandevelde was given a two-minute minor penalty on the play. Toews finished the game.
