Illini Split Weekend Set With Minnesota

After opening up a 6-1 lead early, the Minnesota Golden Gophers answered a late Illinois rally with seven runs, breaking open a 7-5 lead en route to a 14-6 Big Ten Conference win against Illinois Sunday from Illinois Field.

 

The two teams were rained out Saturday, shortening the series to just two games.

 

Austin Athmann, Alex Boxwell and Micah Coffey homered for Minnesota. Coffey drove in four and Boxwell, Athmann, Dan Mtol and Riley Smith drove in a pair for Minnesota, who improved to 27-13 overall and 11-3 in Big Ten action.

 

Doran Turchin paced the Illini bats with a home run and tallied three RBIs.

 

Jason Goldstein finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and Turchin, Jack Yalowtiz and Trent Hammond each had a pair of hits for Illinois.

 

The Illini drop to 12-19 overall and are 7-8 in Big Ten action.

 

They'll play Missouri Tuesday at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
